I recently had the opportunity to do an illustration assignment for the Natuurschool (a dutch organisation that offers schools excursions on beach, dunes, mudflats, etc)
They were looking for a new mascotte and they wanted it to be an animal dressed as a human. I gave them a wide variaty of animals that come up in their programs, indiginous animals to the Netherland, and they chose the shrimp as their new mascotte.

If you want to see this shrimp on a mudflat and his brothers in context just check out the website of the Natuurschool.

I also made illustrations for the booklets that they send to schools and some colouring plates for the children. For these illustrations I also designed new characters of a fox, a sea gull and a seal to make it possible to have some interaction between clearly different roles. The foxes and seals were the smaller children (elementary school), the sea gulls were the older children (high school) and the shrimp were the Natuurschool guides.

I’ve finished all the ten illustrations for the book “Evolution on the beach” by Jos van den Broek. I posted some of the various sketch fases of the infographic about the the joints in the human leg. The idea of the writer was to tell about the drawback of walking on two legs instead of four: all the weight is put on the legs and because of that the joints, as weakest points in the leg, often give trouble eventually. The writer didn’t talk about a specific ailment, so the worn knee cartilage in the first sketch was left out of the final version.

Some of the other illustrations I made for this book can be seen in my scientific illustrations gallery. If you want to see them all in their context you could buy the book, it’s going to be really nice!

A while ago Jos van den Broek (professor Medical Science Communication at the university I used to work) asked me to make illustrations and some infographics for a book he’s writing on evolution on the beach. I’m really thrilled with everything so far. I am working on eight illustrations/infographics, some of them small and some of them will be full pages and even one two page spread! The subjects range from joints in the human leg to the fins on waterbird paws and “ape hair”.

I’ll have to ask if Jos van den Broek minds if I put up sketches in my conceptual section, but at least once the book is published (in April) I hope to be able to add some examples to my scientific gallery.
